🍵 Foundations of Herbal Preparations
Hands-On Botanical Science Lesson | The Bohomeschooler Botanical Series
Grades 5–8
Adaptable for younger or older students and family-style learning
How do herbs become teas, syrups, oils, and salves?
In this hands-on botanical lesson, students explore how different herbal preparation methods extract beneficial compounds from plants. Through observation and experimentation, students discover how heat, time, and different liquids influence the way plant materials release their properties.
Students learn the difference between infusions, decoctions, oils, salves, tinctures, and syrups while exploring how these traditional preparations connect to modern scientific principles.
Designed for Grades 5–8 and adaptable for different learning environments, this lesson combines plant science, chemistry, and practical life skills through simple experiments and real-world applications.
Designed by a Homeschool Parent
This unit study was developed in our own home and tested alongside my 13-year-old son, who helped refine instructions and suggest improvements. It was built for real families and flexible, family-style learning.
